"The Forgotten Staircase"
"The Forgotten Staircase"
Once, in a quiet, unassuming town, there was an old house nestled at the edge of the woods, notorious for the disappearance of every tenant who dared to live there. The house had stood empty for years until a young woman named Elise, looking for a fresh start, ignored the whispers about it and moved in.
On her first night, she heard faint whispers from the basement. Dismissing it as her mind playing tricks, she tried to sleep but couldn’t shake the sensation that someone—or something—was watching her. The next morning, she decided to explore the basement. It was dark and damp, with cobwebs clinging to every corner. In the shadows, she noticed a small door she hadn’t seen before. Curiosity tugged at her, so she opened it.
Behind the door was a staircase leading down into darkness far deeper than the basement walls should allow. Hesitating, Elise descended, her footsteps echoing against stone. Halfway down, the door above her slammed shut, plunging her into pitch-black silence. She fumbled for her phone, trying to light her way, but it wouldn’t turn on.
Then, from the depths, she heard a familiar sound: her own voice, whispering softly, repeating words she knew she’d never said. “Stay. It’s safe here. They were wrong about us.” The whispers grew louder, overlapping, pleading, desperate. Elise felt cold breath on her neck, and suddenly she realized—she wasn’t alone. She could feel someone behind her, mirroring her every movement.
In a panic, she ran back up, only to find the stairs stretched longer with each step, dragging her down. The whispers intensified until they were all around her, relentless, suffocating. They seemed to fill her mind, her skin, even her bones.
When her friends came looking days later, they found no trace of her—only a faint, echoing whisper from the basement: “Stay. It’s safe here.”
And each time someone dared to open that door, they claimed to hear Elise’s voice… echoing in the darkness, as though she was calling for them to join her.
